Wessagussett Yacht Club is a cooperative/member maintained, full service yacht club for both power boaters and sailors. It is located on the shore of North Weymouth at the mouth of the Weymouth Fore River adjacent to Wessagussett Beach. From the club members enjoy quick and easy access to boating on the South Shore including Quincy Bay, Boston Harbor, Hingham Bay, World’s End and the Back and Fore Rivers.
The club consists of a large main building and a significant porch deck area which looks out onto Hingham Bay and the Boston Harbor Islands. Floats, housing numerous rows of boats and a dinghy dock area, are located directly in front of the club. The mooring field also extends directly outward and to the sides, all within view of the club. We include free launch service for all club members.
The club has a full calendar of events including: opening night, family day, Quincy Bay Race Week events and regatta, winter and summer socials, spring and fall dances, installation night, family brunch, Salem Overnight Cruise, Closing night, Turkey dinner (close to Thanksgiving), Christmas Social, Children’s Christmas Party, as well as social, informational and business meetings.
The Weymouth 4th of July fireworks are a special evening. Held only a few hundred feet directly in front of the club, they provide a spectacular display from your boat or the porch deck of the club. This is a family affair and members are encouraged to bring family and friends.
Over 100 Years Of History
Abigail Smith, daughter of the minister of Old North Church, was born in Weymouth Heights in 1744. There she was raised, courted, and married to John Adams of nearby Quincy. They became the parents of John Quincy Adams. For many years, Abigail was the only woman who was married to one president and the mother of another president. John and Abigail were known to enjoy an evening row along Weymouth and Quincy shores.
Captain George Weymouth (1614) explores Martha’s Vineyard for gold and takes Squanto, who had been captured by Captain John Smith’s men, back to England. Weymouth then gets a town named after himself, and here at Weymouth’s Hunt’s Hill, it was believed to be site of the first colony.
Wessagussett Yacht Club was Established in 1902 and Incorporated in 1903, with a rich history in sailing and power yachting within the south shore waterfront community. In the early 1900’s, vacationers from Boston and throughout New England would travel to the shores to enjoy summer time recreation. Today we are still providing access for families to what is now become a National Park with a harbor of 30 Islands to explore!
Tradition Runs Deep
Children have been sailing at Wessagussett Yacht Club for more than fifty years. The primary boat sailed is the Turnabout or the N-10. Other boats used are the Optimist and the 420. The Juniors Sailing Membership is divided into a beginners and an advanced section. The beginners learn the basics of boat handling, knots and water safety and the advanced section teaches the fundamentals of racing and racing tactics.
Through the years the Juniors Sailing Membership has had sailors go on to be college all Americans. Each child takes different things from the program. Some have become captains of industry and the U.S. Navy, some have gone on to Mass Maritime Academy and have pursued a career on the ocean, others have just continued sailing and racing as adults.
Looking To The Future
Current Day Sailing Culture… Wessagussett sailors compete in Wednesday night handicap sailboat racing from May through September each year. Wednesday night racing draws competitors from all over Hingham Bay including the Hull Yacht Club, Hingham Yacht Club, South Shore Yacht Club, Hingham Shipyard Marina and Tern Harbor Marina. There are also several weekend races held throughout the summer. The Wessagussett Yacht Club also hosts our own annual regatta, the Mike Gurrish Regatta for members. Racing is also hosted at clubs throughout Mass Bay. Wessagussett members Dave Nelson, racing his Laser 28, and Jim McShane, racing his Merit 25, have won the PHRF New England’s regatta when that regatta was annually held in Marblehead, MA. Now end of the racing year highlight, The Great Chase Race with over 100 boats, is held in Hingham Bay, just minutes from the Wessagussett Yacht Club’s docks.
A Working Yacht Club That Builds Friendships
For over a hundred years Wessagussett Yacht Club has created a safe harbor for families and friends who, in one way or another heard the call of the SEA. Be it yachtsmen, sailors, fisherman or those who come and gather for the seas peace and majesty. And all it provides us. As we look out over our Harbor, our National Park.
Much of what has made Wessagussett Yacht Club a family friendly club is that we spend time together. With common ends, not only in our play at the sea shore, but taking care of our assets that we hold in common. These are assets passed on to us from one generation to the next. A responsibility we welcome and share.
As a member of Wessagussett Yacht Club, you will be expected to provide two days of service. It’s a pleasant way to build friendships.
